Why Open Source

Open Source Software (OSS) has risen to great prominence. OSS are programs whose licenses give users the freedom to run the program for any purpose, to study and modify the program, and to redistribute copies of either the original or modified program (without having to pay royalties to previous developers).

A Solid Platform

At GPMD we use open source software extensively; all our servers run the Debian Operating System, the Apache Web Server and MySQL or PostgreSQL databases.  These provide us with a solid base from which we provide services and support to our clients.

Apache is currently the number 1 Internet web server, according to Netcraft's statistics on web servers, and has been consistently dominating the Internet web server market since 1996.

Advanced Applications

Whilst the first wave of Open Source software focused on foundation software such as operating systems and databases. The next more recent phase was focused on applications; initially with SilverStripe in 2006 and then Magento in 2007. These two applications marked a real advance in the quality of open source web applications. Both solutions are focused on ease of use and because they are open source do not tie our clients into our services.

Solid Business Case

By using open source solutions we are able to offer our clients enterprise level solutions without the burden of large license fees.  This enables us to focus our efforts on building the right solution for our clients' business, which ultimately gives you more bang for your buck.
