Net-a-Porter behind the scenes

Posted by Richard Johnson on 11 August 2010

I often end up in conversations with potential clients telling me they want to build a website like Net-a-Porter. My response is always the same: "Are you sure?" It's easy to look at a successful website and think "that can't be too difficult".

Here's a behind the scenes look at Net-a-Porter. You'll soon realise that this is a very large operation and requires a huge investment.

In this video is Natalie Massenet, she started her e-boutique 10 years ago.

Key facts about Net-a-Porter:

  • initial investment of £850,000 in 2000.
  • No. 83 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide as of June 2010 (#1 is Amazon.com Inc)
  • 2009 sales were approximately £115m
  • In 2010 the company was bough by Compagnie Financière Richemont SA for £350m

If you are into Net-a-porter apparently the the next hot trend is Gilt, an invite only, time based auction website for luxury goods.
